Neys Provincial Park APPROVED to receive a Canadian Historic Event Plaque !!!

Historic Sites and Monument Board of Canada - announcement:
We were notified on January 30th, 2012 at 4:43 pm that Neys Provincial Park, has been approved as a location for a historic event plaque. As many of you know on July 21, 2011, the Minister of the Environment, approved the nomination of the event titled: "The Detention of Second World War Prisoners of War and Enemy Aliens Sent to Canada from Great Britain" on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Today, the plaque location was announced in an email to us as the nominators on record for this event.

Many of us have been working on this project since June 10, 2008. Neys was the location of Camp 100 during WW-II. With today's announcement, we now know that a plaque will be located at the site of PoW Camp on the north shore of Lake Superior. Neys was one of 29 Camps holding 33,798 PoWs.

With the announcement today, the next steps are:
a) Sorting out the wording for the bronze plaque. This will take sometime as numerous stakeholders will need to be consulted. We are one of the stakeholders.
b) Once the plaque is approved by the HSMBC, then the plaque can be made. The next meeting of the board is July. Casting of the plaque takes many weeks.
c) The unveiling ceremony date and time will then be sorted out.
d) Parks Canada will soon be in touch with Ontario Parks to discuss arrangements.

Thanks to everyone who supported the nomination, wrote letters to the Government, and provided encouragement and support during this long process. We hope we will see many of you at the unveiling ceremony (date and time to be determined)

We are pleased with today's developments especially when we confirmed that we could announce the news.

December 30, 2011 we enjoyed having Brian and Audrey over for supper.

Lucy prepared a superb meal:

Roast of prime rib with all the trimmings

Green beans with almonds and lemon,

Small roasted whole potatoes sprinkled with rosemary

Carrots dripping in a brown sugar sauce.

Salad - slivers of avocado and tomato resting on a bed of lettuce

Desert- mountain dew apple dumplings topped off with whipped cream.

Wine and a selection of different coffees.

Christmas Dinner Volunteers

Earlier we had mentioned that we enjoyed Christmas supper at the Anglican Church. This dinner was open to anyone who wished to come and participate. This is a snapshot of some of the many volunteers who came to help serve dinner to approximately 150 people. Following dinner was a carol sing. We were pleased to note that the Mayor along with a few of the City Aldermen were also helping to serve dinner plus Santa dropped in for a few minutes. Well done everyone!
Dinner was awesome: from shrimp, to cheese balls, soup, turkey, stuffing, ham, vegetables, pies, fruit, cakes, cookies, puddings, candies, beverages; you name it, we had it. There was so much food that many of us went home with a care-package.

All the bears say: "We've been nice but the cat has been naughty, she keeps eating the tree."

Again this year the Salvation Army with the help of many volunteers put together almost 400 boxes of goodies for needy families. The organizers did an awesome job of having everything ready and within 90 minutes all the boxes were filled and ready for shipment or pickup. Well done everyone!

Again this year, we enjoyed a festive evening at our church with over an hour of singing Christmas Carols. The "Men of Song" sang many carols while at other times we all joined in for the enjoyment of everyone. Following the singing, we all enjoyed refreshments downstairs and continued with the social aspects of the evening. Well done everyone!

Japan's Apology to Canadian PoWs.

As many of you know, my uncle was a PoW held by the Japanese military forces following his capture in Hong Kong on Christmas Day, 1941. While he survived, many did not. Now, 66 years after the end of the war, Japan finally issued an apology, unfortunately too late for most of the officers and men who have since died including my uncle Capt. James Spence. (better known as Dr. Mac Spence) Somehow after all these years the heartfelt apology seems somewhat hollow... on the part of the Japanese government in my opinion. On the positive side, I guess the apology is better late than never.

OTTAWA—The government of Japan has issued a “heartfelt apology” to former Canadian prisoners for their suffering during the Second World War.

The apology was delivered today in Tokyo by Toshiyuki Kato, Japan’s parliamentary vice-minister for foreign affairs.

On Christmas Day 1941, the Allies surrendered in Hong Kong after almost 18 days of fighting in which 290 Canadians were killed and 493 wounded.

Those who survived were held prisoner in Hong Kong and Japan until Japan’s surrender on Aug. 15, 1945.

Another 267 men died in the camps, where they were subjected to back-breaking labour and were frequently beaten and starved.

Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney led a delegation of Canadian veterans to Japan for the apology and a commemorative ceremony.

“This important gesture is a crucial step in ongoing reconciliation and a significant milestone in the lives of all prisoners of war,” said Blaney in a statement.”

“It acknowledges their suffering while honouring their sacrifices and courage.”

PoW Painting

Here in Elliot Lake, a friend of ours has this painting that came with the house that they purchased.

On the back was a letter indicating that it was painted by a PoW and given to Robert E. Fox who was also a PoW.

"In the 2 World War I was held as a prisoner of war in England, from October 1944 until the end of December 1947. A fellow prisoner, a teacher by trade painted this picutre for me out of thankfulness for nice meals. I was leading the kitchen as a chefcook. I had given him sugar bags, a little cooking oil, some prisoners working outside the camp collected some treeroots, bricks and limestones. To make the painting he made roots, bricks and stones to powder and mixed it with the oil. With those primitive materials, this picture was painted and presented to me. I was allowed to take it home to my country when released.

(From what we are able to determine, R. Fox must have emigrated to Canada, came to Elliot Lake and owned a house on Central Avenue. Both Robert and his wife are now deceased. )

Emergency Information - Great Idea!

In the November/December 2011 issue of the RV gazette magazine was this letter on page 7 written by Ruth:
"Emergency Information:
I am an older person and unfortunately have some health issues, which cause my family to worry. My daughter insisted that I put a USB flashdrive on my key ring that contains my information including:

my name, age, address, and telephone number

a list of my current medications and allergies to other medications

a list of my current medical diagnoses

my current insurance information as well as the information for my two doctors

On the outside of the flash drive, it reads "Emergency Information" in bold letters

A few months ago I had a heart attack and was not able to communicate whatsoever. Thank goodness that my wise daughter had made me that flash drive! It saved my life. The 2.0 flash drive costs only a few dollars and it took her only a few minutes to create and install on my key ring. Now I take it with me everywhere.

Elliot Lake

We departed Mew Lake about 9:00 a.m. this morning, travelled west on highway #60 to Huntsville, and then north on highway #11 to Trout River. Changed over to #522 and headed westward over to highway #69. Then it was north on #69 to Sudbury and west on #17 to Elliot Lake turn off (highway 108) getting home about 4:30 p.m. Mileage almost identical whether going this route or going via North Bay.

Our stops were to drop off a key at West Gate Office in Algonquin Park, then Tim Hortons in Huntsville for breakfast, lunch was at the Nairn Truck Stop. Gassed up at Nairn also.

Most of the stuff to be moved into the apartment has already happened but we still have a few things still in the Motor Home to unload tomorrow.

Been away for 6.5 months. Good to be home for a few months.

Yurts at Mew Lake #2:

The firm that makes the Yurts (based in Mississauga, ON) is replacing the skins (Roof and wall coverings) on three of the seven yurts this season. (Yurts 34, 38, and 49) The updated material has a much better insulation factor ("R" rating), the stitching is much better, the windows are bigger, and the door is a full 36 inches wide. The original structure was a bit higher by a few inches, so the upright metal posts had to be shortened a few inches.

The two fellows doing the work were telling me that they have these structures in various configurations from the high Arctic down to the Caribbean. They have designed various structures for the military, parks, private use, hospital usage, fixed locations, and portable units.

In Algonquin Park: the results are a very nice looking set up complete with two bunk beds, (sleep 6), table, and chairs, with electric heater, overhead light, smoke detector, fire extinguisher, broom, dust pan, matt, snow shovel, and a metal shelf.

Yesterday, when we invited Dave and Melba to our place for supper on Friday, we discovered it was going to be their wedding anniversary.

Today November 25, 2011 is Melba and Dave's 44th Anniversary and they chose to celebrate it in Algonquin Park at Mew Lake Campground. We are having a prime rib dinner complete with butter tarts made with pure maple syrup.

Tuesday, Nov 22, 2011: This morning the Mew Lake where the campground is located had a layer of ice covering about 95% of the lake. Sure sign of cold temperatures are here. Thanks to a furnace and an electric heater, we are nice and cozy inside our motor home.

No snow, and today the temperature is to reach + 5 Celc.

Algonquin Park Update

It is always interesting to learn bits and pieces of information about this park. One of the things that was brought home to us this week was the extent that the park is ready for most emergencies. Seems there is a plan in place for medical emergencies, people lost emergencies, fire, etc. As we understand it the park has two defibrillators (AED), at East Gate (not confirmed by us) and at the Visitor Centre. Unfortunately the V.C. is only open on the weekends during the off season.

Last evening we had three campsite occupied. (ourselves and two others - a motor home and a trailer - both of them have now departed.)

Friday Evening: we are expecting 6 of 7 yurts to be occupied. As for other campsites, already one pop up trailer has arrive (about 12:00 noon) and we know of one other that is coming in late but since it is the weekend we anticipate we will have many more arriving.

Wolves: we have not seen or heard the wolves recently.

Blue Jays and Grey Jays: Lots of them around.

Chickadees: again, lots of them around.

Canada Geese: a flock has been near the swimming beach for sometime now - anticipate they will be heading south anytime now.

Other Ducks: a few around. They like to visit the shoreline campsites looking for handouts.

Partridges: many of them around. Lucy has started calling them Algonquin Chickens.

Moose: had not seen a moose in about 10 days now.

Squirrels and Chipmunks are busy running around.

Mice: It is the season that the mice are looking for a nice warm place to reside for the winter. During the past 24 hours we have caught two in our unit and the trap is reset.

Snow Update: only traces of snow around so far, but it is coming...

Camphost: In the summer the host site is #47 but in the winter, the host site selection is up to the individual host to select a site. Most of us prefer to be away from the lake and the cold winds therefore we tend to set up inland to make use of the wind protection provided by the trees and brush.

For us, we selected campsite #11 which is also next to the comfort station and a good location to obtain both hot and cold water.

Saturday Morning Update: Total of 3 mice caught.
We had 14 campsites occupied last night.

Parks Canada Presentation

Yesterday, Lucy and I made the 450 km round trip to North Bay to specifically see this presentation featuring two of the most beautiful national parks in Canada: Pukaskwa, a park of mesmerizing beauty on the shores of Lake Superior, and Tuktut Nogait, a park located north of the Arctic Circle.

The scenery in both parks was unbelieveable. Pukaskwa is visitor accessible from highway 17 in Northern Ontario between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie, via paved road. Remote Tuktut Nogait is only accessible via float plane and there is absolutely no roads, buildings, or other support features. Last season there were less than 10 recorded visitors.

Update: Don Lavers

I received a message from the Lavers family thanking me for my letter and informing me that they had read it to everyone at the graveside ceremony. I was both honoured and touched. Sure had to take some deep breaths as a lot of emotions quickly came to the surface. Thanks to the marvels of the internet that allowed my message to reach the family that quickly.

It was Lucy's detective skills on the computer and internet that allowed us to locate the family, obtain an email address and get a message to them on the day of the furneral. One of Don's family members even asked us how we were able to track them down.

When Alex Thompson died, I did not find out about it until almost two years later. I immediately called his wife as I was so shocked that somehow I had not heard the news. I was determined that with Don's family they would know how I felt about Don and all that he did as quickly as possible.

Rest in peace Don!

Donald W. Lavers, Alberta

Tribute to Don:

Date: March 26, 1987
Place: Ontario Headquarters, Scouts Canada,
Location: Toronto, Ontario.
Time: 8:30 a.m.

Don Lavers arrived to attend a meeting and quickly was pressed into action. I had collapsed on my office floor and Don came to my aid. He along with Alex Thompson administered CPR on me until the paramedics arrived 7-8 minutes after receiving a 9-1-1 call.

I had suffered a heart attack for which there had been no warning of any kind. I collapsed on the floor with such a thud, that others came running. Now, that is not an approved method or way to start any meeting but that is what happened that day, many years ago.

Don passed away in Alberta the other day. How does one say thank you to someone who saved your life. Words just do not seem adequate enough but for Don that way okay.

Both Don and Alex received a citation from Scouts Canada for their deed and I had the honour of being present in Ottawa when that occurred. For me it was an emotional moment that still chokes me up even after all these years.

To the Lavers family I offer my sincere condolences. Don was a gem of a guy. He will be remembered for all his kindness to others and will be especially remembered by me.

Don, may you rest in peace.

Winter - 1st Snow ground cover this season:

Morning of October 29th, we have snow on the pumpkin. Good thing we winterized a few days ago.

With the electrical cords, the power creates heat so that the cords do not become frozen where as the satellite cords could become frozen in when it becomes time to move.

Where are the Christmas lights? What about a few gifts?

Today was winterize day for us as we drained our water system, and put in the RV antifreeze (pink stuff). The Park staff were also starting to blow out the water lines in the campground. Soon the only supply of available water will be at the comfort station. Weather forecast for tonight is below freezing by morning. Brrr...rr..rr..rr.

My tasks during the day were to be at the ELWW table to sell our books in the morning and in the afternoon I assisted our MC Paul along with enjoying listening to various authors read their works. When it was my turn to read, I selected two of the five articles published in the Penpourri : "Insignificant Grain of Sand" and "Willow" (pages 153 and 163).

It was an awesome day for the Elliot Lake Writers Workshop. Thanks to everyone who helped out and participated.

Algonquin Park - Mew Lake Wolves

Earlier we were indicating that we have wolves living near Mew Lake and they can be heard a number of times during a week including an increasing number of visual sightings. At least one sighting was actually in the campground.

Many people bring their pets with them when camping. Walking your pet is a good thing as long as the pet is on a leash. Recently we have had a number of encounters between a wolf and humans, or a wolf and human with a pet. In two cases it has been reported that the wolf has not run away but stood its ground.

The park is about to post notices for the safety of everyone and their pets. A wolf would make short work of a family's pet. Please keep your pets on a leash at all times even while on your campsite.

Remember: We are invading the wolf's territory. Be respectful, be carefull, and please be guided by what the park staff advise.

Anyone seeing a wolf, or having an encounter with a wolf is being advised to let the Park Staff or Camp Ground Host know immediately. The host is in radio to contact with the park staff.

We have enjoyed having David and Connie visit us for the past couple of days. Even though the weather was wet, we did get out to see some of the wildlife. David went out two morning looking for moose and was rewarded both times. The highlight was a video he was able to take of two bull moose crossing a stream and coming up on to the road he was standing on. Incredible video. One of those, once in a life time shots. We will post a link to his video once we receive it.

One afternoon around 6:00 pm we were out, no moose but the grey jays were very entertaining.

As many of you know, volunteers knowing CPR saved my life twice along with the paramedics and hospital staff who came to my aid. Since then we have purchased our own rebuilt portable defibrillator.   We were very surprise to discover that I had to pay over $100 HST when it was delivered.   We have appealed to the HST people who informed us that the Department of Finance sets the rules. We have written to the Minister of Finance last July and are still waiting for a decision. We believe defibrillators should be rated as zero tax.

We purchased the portable unit for two very specific reasons:
a) Potential personal use
b) We do volunteer work in both National and Provincial Parks. We have yet to find a park with a unit nearby.   In most cases a 911 call will result in a considerable time delay before help arrives.

OTTAWA—Don’t just stand there, do something.

That’s the recommendation from emergency physicians who say too many Canadians are dying from cardiac arrests because bystanders refuse to help. The doctors are pushing for a renewed campaign to teach Canadians how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

But they say bystanders who have no training at all in CPR have a moral obligation to do chest compressions that could be enough to save a life.

“You cannot harm a cardiac arrest victim. You cannot do CPR wrong. Doing something helps,” said Dr. Christian Vaillancourt, an emergency physician at the Ottawa Hospital.

He’s one of the authors of a new position paper that calls for “strong inducements” to give Canadians the training to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“It must become a moral obligation and a social expectation that bystanders will perform CPR when they witness a cardiac arrest,” said the paper released by the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians on Thursday.

“The victims of cardiac arrest will almost certainly die if lay witnesses do not intervene,” the paper says.

Each year, more than 20,000 people in Canada suffer a cardiac arrest and less than 2,000 survive. But while heart attack victims are three to four times more likely to survive if they receive prompt CPR, that happens only 25 per cent of the time, the association says.

Boosting that to 50 per cent would save 2,000 lives a year in Canada.

“It is not acceptable that vast numbers of witnessed cardiac arrest victims do not receive bystander CPR,” the association said.

Doctors say bystanders are reluctant to get involved because they either lack the training or they fear their CPR skills are rusty, “leading to hesitation and inaction.”

But they say everyone has an obligation to act, even if they’ve never been trained in CPR.

“All Canadians should respond and provide chest compressions (with or without mouth-to-mouth ventilation) whether they are trained or not, when an adult, child or infant suddenly collapses,” the paper said.

Still, emergency doctors say CPR should be a “life skill” known by every Canadian.

To make that happen, the doctors are targeting young people, saying CPR training should be a prerequisite to graduate from high school. That training is already a mandatory part of the high school curriculum in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta, according to the Advanced Coronary Treatment Foundation.

Since 1997, the foundation has helped more than 260,000 Toronto students receive CPR training.

The emergency doctors are also urging tax breaks for companies that provide CPR training and individuals who take it.

They want a focus on senior citizens, the population most likely to witness a cardiac arrest and be in a position to respond.

The recommendations were welcomed by Toronto paramedics, who too often arrive at the scene to find no one is helping the victim.

“That’s lethal for the patient,” said Peter Macintyre, spokesperson for Toronto Emergency Medical Services.

He urged bystanders to step in and said EMS dispatchers reached through 911 will help with instructions on how to perform CPR.

“It’s a scary thing. But one thing to remember is the person is dead. They have no pulse, they’re not breathing. They’re dead. Nothing you’re going to do to them is going to make that any worse,” Macintyre said.

“Do CPR and they’ve got a chance. Don’t do CPR, their chances diminish very quickly.”

Again, we enjoyed the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at Mew Lake with the Couchman Family. This year there were 35 of us gathering around four picnic tables enjoying various appetizers, turkey, ham, whipped potatoes, corn, carrots, dressing, and gravy. Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, and butter tarts rounded off the meal.

Two turkeys were cooked using the metal garbage can method. 18-20 lbs birds, cooked in 2.5 hours. Various families all cooked parts of the meal, everything arrived hot. GREAT MEAL.

Children had the opportunity to play the pinata with great shouts of delight.

We departed Chutes Provincial Park in Massey yesterday morning on schedule and as per our custom, we stopped for breakfast at Tim Hortons (Espanola) before heading eastward past Sudbury, and into North Bay for lunch. Then we headed southward to Huntsville and eastward again into the park arriving about 4:30 pm. After getting somewhat set up, it was down the road a few sites. Jim and Roma had invited us over for supper and what a delight that was especially after a day of travelling. Thanks Jim and Roma.

We understand the Steve and Marsha S. are at Rock Lake (arrived on Sunday). We are looking forward to seeing them soon.

Then it was back to our own site (#11) to set up the satellite dish in the dark. Eventually all was working and link up was established. Getting to be somewhat more difficult each year as the trees grow, but we continue to be lucky as there is a hole in the trees for a shot at the satellite.

Chutes had hardly any campers whereas Mew Lake is almost full. Everyone here for the fall colours which are at there best right now. Did not see any moose yesterday. We understand that there is a pack of wolves near by and they are on the prowl each night including howling a few times. We could hear people last evening trying to call the wolves but that was early in the evening.

Chutes Provincial Park - Fall Colours

Our time at Chutes Provincial Park is quickly coming to a close for this season. On Monday, Sept. 26th we say goodbye to Chutes and hello Algonquin Park.

The changing leaves at Chutes is happening quickly, and is making for interesting enjoyable walking around.

Pukaskwa National Park Update

I've been in contact with PNP. We receive some very encouraging news. It seems that the Spirit Trail that has been closed due to an engineer's assessment of the observation decks, is now receiving a 'second' look. There is hope that the decks can remain and the trail, not re-routed after all the work that was done to build the decks and trail originally.

Our non technical evaluation of the matter is that the decks were very well constructed and to have to remove them would be a colossal waste of scarce resources. In fact I wrote to the CEO of Parks Canada asking for an intervention to prevent the waste that was about to occur.

We sincerely hope that decks, the trail, the steps, can all stay in place. The view from the decks is awesome especially when visited on a clear day and you can see the curvature of the earth if you look for it. Very impressive with the black rocks, the green water changing to blue, as a hawk rises on the air currents overhead. A special place amoung so many incredible views to be enjoyed at Pukaskwa National Park.

After taking pictures on Sept 15, I uploaded them to the computer and went to put the memory card back in the camera. According to Nikon, there is a little spring that helps to keep the memory card in the camera and that appears to have malfunction. Now I will be without my Nikon camera for almost two months due to travelling so the camera should be waiting for us upon our return to Elliot Lake.

Lucy and I went fishing again this morning and managed to get some walleyes. Pictured below is the four fillets that we came home with. What is not shown is the fish that got away. Yeah I know, you are thinking another fish story. Well, in this case Lucy caught a nice (estimated) 18 inch walleye, I netted it and got it in the boat. After we got the fish off of the hooks, and out of the net, I was about to measure the fish (there is a slot size in effect where we were fishing and fish between 16 and 22 inches have to be returned to the water). In this case as I was about to hold up the fish to do the measuring, using the tape measure stuck to the inside of the boat, the fish gave a flip, and flopped out of my hands back into the water and was gone. Let me tell you, it is not a recommended way to impress your partner even if the fish was going to be return. No picture, no opportunity to admire the fish, etc. It was gone!

Many of you know about our Historical Event Project involving the Veterans Guard of Canada and the German PoWs held in Canada during WW-ll. One of the people who recently contacted us, was looking for information about his grandfather who was a guard at Neys Camp 100, now a Provincial Park. It turns out that I had a picture of his grandfather that I was able to share with him. It was a picture that his family had not seen before. In return he sent me a picture of the two ships in bottles that he has from his grandfather who got them from a PoW in exchange for some unknown items. At some point in the future, we will learn when and where the official unveiling ceremony will be held in honour of this historial event that has the title:

"The Detention of Second World War Military Prisoners of War and of Enemy Aliens Sent to Canada from Great Britain"

We visited this Provincial Park for a few hours today as Kim, Gwen, Christopher and Noel invited us for come and see them. One of the neat things about this park is just down the road a few km is the town of Killarney. In this town, down at the wharf, is an awesome fish and chip stand.

Earlier today we said good bye with plans to meet up at Mew Lake in Algonquin Park on September 26th. Jim, Lucy and Roma are pictured giving a group hug and smiling for the camera. We enjoyed camping with them for the past few weeks and look forward to meeting up with them again soon. We already have plans for a number of meals together.

Cancelled - First time in 42 years

On Sunday, August 21 in Goderich Ontario a tornado touched down and destroyed much of the downtown. Goderich is the home base for the Mait Group that goes fishing every year and as a member of that group for 42 years, the annual tradition has been something to look forward to, for each of us. With the destruction that happened in a matter of minutes, the Mait Group has had to reschedule our trip to next year. Thankfully all the Mait Group members are safe but the town suffered a major blow! We wish everyone all the best as the town starts to pull together and rebuild.

For years the gang fished at the mouth of the Key River, then moved to Miller Lake, Red Cedar Lake, Marten River and Lake, and now the Spanish River. While the members of the group have changed, a few of us date back years and years to the beginning or near start of the group. I joined in 1970. This awesome group have enjoyed hours and hours of fishing, shore lunches, toured miles and miles of waterways, caught a lot of fish over the years and enjoy many card games.

We will be back at it next year!

To the Mait Group Members: The walleye fishing this year started out very slowly and lately has improved significantly. Lets hope the fishing is as good next year! (see posting below)

We said goodbye to Steve and Marsha on Saturday morning but missed getting a picture.
Friday evening 10 of us went out for dinner to the local Dragonfly for casual Fine Dining. Then on Saturday evening 8 of us visited Melba and Dave's for a pot luck dinner under the awning.

Turns out that after all these years of having Thanksgiving Dinner with Melba and Dave, this year we are going to be allowed to bring something. Turns out Dave has a weakness for butter tarts. Lucy's butter tarts made with pure maple syrup and whipped cream on top was an instant success and now Dave has asked her to bring tarts on Thanksgiving.

Two boats, four guys, four hours, and zero fish to bring home. One boat caught two very small fish, that were returned to the water to grow. Other than than that, if it was not for bad luck, we would not have any luck at all yesterday late afternoon and evening. In all, we still had a good tune out bouncing up and down on the water as the waves were interesting. Time to change.. Next trip we will concentrate more on bottom bouncing as we understand that some people are having some success with this method.

We had a delightful supper with these two. They were enjoying the comments being made by other campers upon seeing their decorated campsite.

They arrive during the afternoon at Chutes after a very rough crossing on the ferry to Manitoulin Island. Also there is considerable construction on hwy 6 on the island for those thinking about travelling that way. With the reservation fee, small vehicle, (no trailer), two people travelling, the ferry costs were in the area of $85.00

"5. PROPOSED PLAQUE LOCATION

According to the proponent and to Dr. Chris Madsen, the ideal location for a plaque is the site of the former prisoner of war camp No. 100 in Neys Provincial Park, Ontario. Located on the North Shore of Lake Superior not far from the town of Marathon, the site was alternately an officers and a non-commissioned ranks camp. The camp opened in 1941 to house German navy and air force prisoners of war, as well as Great Britain’s civilian internees and enemy merchant sailors, and it became a processing camp for all prisoners of war detained in Northwestern Ontario until the end of the war. The length of time of the camp’s operations, therefore, covers both the early and later periods, and many of the prisoners there also worked at surrounding work-sites and satellite camps in the forestry sector. From 1946 to 1948, it served as a relocation camp for Japanese Canadian civilians until it was transformed into a minimum-security work camp for criminals from the Thunder Bay area. Neys Provincial Park was created in 1965. Although the camp was dismantled in 1954, its visible building foundations within an existing park infrastructure with interpretation programs, and proximity to tourist and resident traffic on Trans-Canada Highway, make it, in the opinion of Madsen, an ideal location for plaque readers to get a sense of what the camp was like.111

The location of the former camp in Bowmanville, Ontario, could also be appropriate for a plaque. Built as a reformatory for boys in 1925, the school (with its gymnasium, swimming pool and other recreational buildings) was converted in 1941 into a prisoner of war camp for German officers and was renamed Camp 30. Located at 2020 Lambs Road in the northeast outskirts of Bowmanville, the former Camp 30 is known for the internment of the highest-ranking officers of the German army and navy, and of the famous U-Boat skipper, Otto Kretschmer. It was also the site of the famous 1942 Battle of Bowmanville. After the war, the training school for boys reopened, but closed in October 1979. Most recently, an Islamic School operated on the site. Today, the collection of 18 buildings on 40 hectares of rural land remains intact, though trespassing and vandalism have caused damage to some of the buildings, including the two that were set on fire in March 2009.112 The camp has recently received a considerable amount of attention from the press113 and local communities who are trying to prevent the site from being razed for housing as a bedroom community to Toronto.114

A third potential location for a plaque is at one of the former prisoner of war camps in Alberta, the province that housed and manned four of the largest camps. Lethbridge and Medicine Hat were the largest prisoner of war camps in North America. According to Madsen, however, they are “off the beaten path” and very little footprint remains.115 In Lethbridge, only the Lethbridge Historical Society marker recalls the massive encampment that once stood there (Figure 11).116 In Kananaskis Country Provincial Park, Alberta, the former Camp 130 commander’s cabin has become the Colonel’s Cabin Historic Site, a museum and visitor centre for Barrier Lake Field Station. One of the original guard towers still stands near the museum."

A possible snag in the nomination has emerged. Please read the shocking latest developments:

It turns out that when we were phoned, the Director gave us only part of the story. Yes, the nomination was approved as a national historic event but then the caller did not share the rest of the information. Yes, I was excited on the phone with the caller, and the caller seemed genuinely pleased about that including chatting about meeting at the unveiling ceremony. Nowhere in the conversation did I understand that there might be another aspect to the story. In the follow up email, again, there was nothing that I understood to be a potential twist.

1, July 22, 2011: Email received from HSMBC Director’s office @ 3:56 pm: (Phone call was received prior to this.)
“As mentioned, this has been designated a national historic event. A letter from the Minister will follow shortly. ... Congratulations! “

... “I am horrified that after all of this, I was not consulted as to a potential change in location. My recommendation has always been Neys and for me to even consider a different location would undermine not only my support but that of many others for this project. Please advise what I can do to ensure that the location for the plaque is Neys.” ...

5. July 27, 2011: Email received from HSMBC Director’s office @ 9:51 am:

New National Historic Event approved

A plaque will be unveiled sometime in the future once details are arranged honouring another aspect of Canada's contribution to the war: "The Detention of Second World War Military Prisoners of War and of Enemy Aliens Sent to Canada from Great Britain". The location of this will be Neys Provincial Park on the north shore of Lake Superior. Neys was one of 40 PoW locations during WW-11 and will now be honoured as the focal point of this event for all of Canada. Canada housed over 34,000 German PoWs of which more than 30% returned to Canada following the war.

Lucy and I undertook this project starting in June of 2008 while writing a magazine article, and today, July 22, 2011 (37 months later) we learned that the file was approved by the Federal Minister of the Environment, the Honourable Peter Kent.

Additional details will be announced later but in the meantime, we want to thank the many people who wrote letters of support on behave of this nomination.

Another aspect of our Canadian History is finally being recognized.

Our friends Jim and Roma S. have the same satellite internet system. Now that they have moved campsites they can set up their dish beside our system and be connected to the outside world also. Jim has his tv dish on his campsite but was unable to get through the trees for the internet. By setting up next to us, he is able to lock on to the internet satellite. Between the two of us, we had more than enough cables to accomplish the task.

Water Nozzles are back in the news again...

Ontario Parks introduced a new water nozzle a year or so ago much to the consternation of some RVers who only have city water style connections for water. This new nozzle was one of the fallouts from the Walkerton water crises of a number of years ago. Since then Ontario Parks following the CSA regulations introduced this nozzle. Then when the comments started to come in and people were complaining, some of the parks introduced a tap at the drinking water tower (blue) yet people were still developing work around solutions. In this picture, using tape to work around the back flush potential that the nozzle was designed to prevent. In other parks campers have to go to another location to fill up with water if they only have a city water connection. In this picture the park added a regular water tap for those who do not have a gravity feed fill system.

At the dump station, some rigs have sprayers inside their black and grey tanks to help with flushing their tanks. Without a city water type connection, people will find a work around solution. In this case, tape up the back flow slots in the nozzle, add a fitting to the white hose and attach to the sprayer system.

Efforts to have the CSA review this and come up with a more workable solution have only met with delays and more frustration. Let hope that the National Parks do not follow the Ontario Parks system.

I know the goal is to have safe drinking water. Lets not have a system that encourages people to tamper with the safety of our drinking water.

Having a system that allows for people to clean out their holding tanks (black and grey) needs to be included with the regular features of a dump station.

I have again sent CSA another email asking for a status report.

July 19: Roma, Jim, Lucy and I spent the day out on the waters of the Spanish River and North Channel. It was one of those days best described as a "lobster" day. You know, everyone turned red due to the powerful sun with little breeze for most of the day. The fish even took the day off. In spite of not catching anything (opps, Lucy did get one small pike) we had a great day, enjoyed some german sausages and other goodies for lunch.

Pukaskwa National Park - More Updates

Long time followers of this blog and others interested in the developments at Pukaskwa National Park will appreciate knowing of the significant improvements that have taken place at Pukaskwa.

Earlier today we received some additional good news in addition to the other good news recently. Let me explain:

a) In 2009 major improvements to the campsites at Hattie Cove Campground was accomplished. 13 campsites received major upgrades while all the others received significant brush removal to help open up the overgrown sites. Now any type of camping equipment from the smallest tent to the largest RV is welcomed and can be accomodated.

b) Access to the individual campsites were improved. (Don't forget the road from highway #17 is paved all the way into the campground.

c) Coastal trail is now officially reopened (2011) Both the White River and Willow River bridges have been rebuilt and hikers are now enjoying the opportunity to hike the full trail. Many visitors enjoy the day hike to the White River bridge (7.8 km) one way. The full trail is 60 km (one way).

d) Dumpstation: Almost complete - After years of problems, everything is now installed, and water for flushing should be running within the next few days. This is good news! (Remember: Red water tower - this is not for drinking). Only use water from the blue tower for drinking water or as more commonly referred to as potable water. (* see note below)

e) Access to drinking water:

Water Tower at entrance way to park: Almost complete - Everything is installed, and water should be available soon. The park is currently awaiting the test results to ensure potability of the water.
Water tap at comfort station: The park has been maintaining a long hose at the location, so visitors are not having to back up their camper. The park is exploring the option of installing a new tap near the front of the building to make access easier (although they hope it will receive minimal use once they have the new water station in place).

f) Spirit Trail: At present, only a portion of the trail remains unopened. Visitors are still able to enjoy views of Lake Superior.

g) Campsite Permit - Staff have been provided with documentation as to various features of each electrical campsite that should help RVers select the appropiate campsite for their camping equipment.

* At the Dump Station: Water from red towers is potentially contaminated due to flushing waste water (toilet and sink liquids). Be safe, only put potable or drinking water (blue tower) into your holding tank. If in doubt, ask someone. Be safe, don't be sorry!

This is another one of our favourite Ontario Parks. Nice size campsites, reasonably level, and we like campsite #2 as we can set up our satellite internet and TV dish nearby in the open field. We are also near the comfort station, and our site has just the right amount of shade and sun.

Our friends Jim and Roma S. also arrived yesterday afternoon about an hour ahead of us and will be staying for two weeks also. Jim and I are going fishing at the mouth of the Spanish River next week. As we will be out in some large water, we are going to rent a boat from Blue Heron Resort. This is the same place that I have been fishing with the Mait Group for the past few years. Should be a good time.

We departed Neys Provincial Park on Monday travelling along highway /17 going southward. Foggy day.
Lake Superior Provincial Park was again a pleasure to drive through with various views of the Lake Superior and fog. Turned hot and sticky but we did arrive at Pancake Bay Provincial Park. While we had a reservation for site 332, it turned out that we really didnot care for that site. Lucy noticed that the handicapped site was unoccupied so I checked. As luck would have it, the lady in the lineup at the counter had a permit that she did not want and it was for site 346, the site that we were interested in. Turns out she did not feel comfortable using a handicapped site when no one in their party was handicapped. How come they were issued the permit she did not know. So when we got to the counter, she was able to get a site she wanted and we were able to get the site we wanted.

On Tuesday, we arrived at Chutes Provincial Park and received a message that Jim and Roma S. were already in the park and had been looking for us. After getting set up, went to their site and we decided that the four of us would go out for supper at the Dragonfly. GREAT MEAL. We are now going to stay put for about two weeks.

Pukaskwa’s Coastal Hiking Trail re-opens

Bridges built to last for generations

Heron Bay, Ontario, July 11, 2011 – The 60-kilometre long Coastal Hiking Trail

winding along Lake Superior’s shore in Pukaskwa National Park will be re-opening on

July 15, 2011. The re-opening of the trail marks the completion of significant

infrastructure upgrades, including complete reconstruction of the White River and

Willow River suspension bridges and trail improvements such as replacement of

boardwalks, footbridges, and stairs and enhancements to campsites, pit privies and

bear boxes.

Pukaskwa’s Coastal Hiking Trail is a premier backcountry hiking destination in

Northern Ontario. The new suspension bridges have an estimated lifespan of 75

years, allowing generations of future hikers and backpackers to explore and discover

the Wildshore of an Inland Sea.

A guided hike to the White River suspension bridge is planned for July 16, Parks Day.

Energetic visitors interested in taking a hike are asked to meet at the Visitor Centre at

9 am for the 15-km round trip. Be sure to pack a lunch, bring lots of water and wear

sturdy footwear. For more information call the park at (807) 229-0801.

Pukaskwa National Park is Ontario’s only wilderness park administered by Parks

Canada. At 1878 square kilometres, it protects and presents the hilly boreal forest terrain

of the Canadian Shield – broken by ridges and cliffs, riddled with rock-rimmed lakes and

clothed in shallow soils. It lies adjacent to Lake Superior, which exerts its sometimes

warming, sometimes cooling influences upon the shore.

Established in 1911 as the Dominion Parks Branch, Parks Canada is the world’s oldest

national parks service. Parks Canada turns 100 in 2011 – come celebrate!

Our trip from Round Lake to Neys Provincial Park included a stop over in Thunder Bay at the Super Store for a few items, then a stop at Loon Lake to see Jim and Leah. While driving down the wet highway we noticed at Rossport Campground (Rainbow Falls Provincial Park) this older model motor home towing a small trailer. On the window was a hand printed sign - "To Nova Scotia or bust" Sign was made by the grand daughter. We arrived back at Neys, got set up, had supper and I was in bed by 9:30.

Started in Neys Provincial Park, met Mark Richardson, travelled to Thunder Bay, mentioned on CBC Radio and website, my mothers memorial service and now we are mentioned in the Toronto Star and yesterday we returned to Neys for a few days before heading eastward.

Farewell

On July 8th the Spence Family said their farewells to my mother on a great day, sunshine and a calm lake. With the help of Rev Mark Arnold, we scattered flower petals on the lake as we drifted along that morning. In the afternoon we welcomed many friends and relatives to the camp for an open service and sharing time followed by some incredible food. The table settings were something that my mother would have been very happy with. She taught us well.

A few weeks ago, some writer friends informed me of a contest that CBC Radio was having for writers. Writers could submit up to 100 words and a picture about an area that inspires them to write and my contribution was selected. Then to have this all appear on July 8th was a double honour as that was the day we celebrated my mother's life with a memorial service out at the Spence Camp at Round Lake near Thunder Bay.

Thanks to Linda for passing on the note otherwise I am sure I would have missed it what with everything that was happening on a very emotional that day.

Mark was sanitizing his fresh water tank and we were able to show him how to drain his tank to flush it out so that the water would be fresh and drinkable.

When I read Mark's blog, I realized that he just might be in the Neys Provincial Park area so I sent him note inviting him to stop in and and I would give him a copy of our book - "Four Seasons RVing". Mark is a RV Newbie and he needed some help. In addition to giving him a copy of our book, we also gave him some bleach with instructions on how to sanitize the rented RV fresh water tank. You can read his blog to see why we did this.

Mark and the gang visited Neys Visitor Centre, got some info about the PoW camp and some data about our attempt to have this made a historic site by the Federal Government.

We will be following Mark's adventure as he travels across our great country. All the best Mark, and thanks for stopping in.

2011/ 2012 Winter Program

We are pleased to bring you the details for the On-site Winter Storage Program for 2011/2012. This program is unique to MacGregor Point Provincial Park. It provides campers the opportunity to camp with their trailer without having to move it during the winter season. New for this year we have reduced the on-site trailer storage fee and have added an extra week to the program dates.
Program Dates: November 1st, 2011 to April 16, 2012
Sites Available: There will be 26 sites available for booking. Sites are located in Birch Boulevard of the Algonquin campground. The site numbers are 44, 45, 47, 49, 51, 52, 54, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 71, 73, 75, 76, 78, 79, 82, 83, 86, 88, 89, and 91. One double site 84/85 is available for parties that wish to camp side by side.
Fees:
The fees for 2011/12 will be:

On Site Storage Fee = $150.00 (non-refundable) due at time of booking

20 Night Minimum Commitment = 20 x $36.75 = $735.00 (regular rate)

(HST Included) = 20 x $29.50 = $590.00 (senior rate)

= 20 x $18.25 = $365.00 (disabled rate)

The $150.00 non-refundable storage fee is due at the time of booking. The trailer storage fee is for storage onsite for the dates of the program only and does not include parking in the trailer storage compound prior to the program start or after the program end.

The 20 night minimum can be paid up front at the time of booking, or can be paid in 2 instalments of 10 nights on or before August 31, 2011 and 10 nights on or before October 31st, 2011.

If the camper does not stay 20 nights, this fee will not be refunded. If the camper stays more than 20 nights, the regular camping fee will be charged on a per night basis. Additional vehicles fees will apply if you have more than one vehicle in the park.

Reservations: Reservations will be taken 5 months in advance of the program start date, beginning on June 1st, 2011 at 7:00 pm EST. Reservations can be made by calling Janice Pearce at '519-389-6237'. Booking will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be aware this phone does not have voice mail, if you get a busy signal, it is because we are currently taking another reservation; please try your call again. Only one reservation will be taken per phone call; the only exception to this is the booking of the double site which can be booked in the same call.

This phone line is only activated for the night of June 1st; bookings after that date should be directed to Janice by calling the main park number '519-389-9056'.

In order to speed the reservation process, please review the sites available and have a few sites selected in case your favourite site has been booked by someone else.

Cancellations: Cancellations made on or before August 31, 2011 will be refunded the amount paid to date less the $150.00 non refundable storage fee. Cancellations made on or before October 31, 2011 will be refunded the amount paid to date less the $150.00 non-refundable storage fee and a $150.00 penalty fee. After October 31, 2011, no refunds will be given. In extenuating circumstances (member of the camping party is seriously ill or injured, death in the immediate family), campers may be eligible for a full refund. Refund request must be made in writing to the Park Superintendent with documentation/proof supporting the reason attached. The request will be reviewed on its own merit and there is no guarantee that a refund will be approved.
